C Magazine’s Guide to Flower Arranging

Just in time for Graduation, C Magazine’s Gin Williams and Disha Manayilakath shares their tips on making a flower arrangement

Step 1: Chose your flowers

Choosing your flowers is arguably the most crucial part of making your arrangement. We recommend selecting at least three types: one for a color that makes a statement, one that complements your statement flower, and one that provides greenery or filler in your bouquet. In this arrangement, we used orange tulips as my central flower, complementing them with the spiky chrysanthemums. To fill the space and add depth, we used mini carnations, baby’s breath, and eucalyptus leaves to add greenery and some smaller textures.

Pro Tip: Trader Joe’s has numerous flower options that are much cheaper than other stores. This provides you with many choices but won’t completely break the bank.

Step 2: Prepare your Flowers

To ensure that your flowers last for as long as possible, we recommend chopping off the end of the stem of each flower at an angle, as seen in the pictures below. This ensures that the flowers can drink up the water well. We would also remove any leaves that appear to be dying or are not in the best condition, giving you more room and a healthier-looking bouquet. Lastly, use the flower food that comes in many flowers you buy to add to the water, and make sure you change the water regularly.

Step 3: Start your Arrangement

First, start by placing your first flowers. Then, we would recommend slowly adding in your other flowers, rotating so that all of the flowers are mixed. Place these flowers together until you are satisfied, then add some filler greenery and smaller flowers to round out the bouquet. This will help to add height and different textures. After adding the greenery, add more flowers to integrate them. If it starts to look like there is too much greenery, add more colorful flowers and shapes to create more visual diversity.

Step 4: Give your Arrangement to a Loved One!

Your bouquet is done! Give it to a loved one for a particular day. Perfect for graduations and birthdays.
